I Have Never Seen God

But I have seen a human develop in the womb of another human. Then 10 months later, the mother burst like a piñata and everyone impatiently rushed with excitement not for perishable candy, but to witness the birth of a human with a soul. Life is life’s goal.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

But invisible, monsoonal emotions in my heart synchronized with the currents of the sea and threw my wife at me as the sea throws hurricanes at the land. Now addition, multiplies into subtraction and two become one. The matrimonial mystery unfolds each day as the rising sun.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

But I have heard His voice. It humbled me yet became my boast. It is forceful yet gentle. Frightening yet approachable. An ecstasy yet sobering. It filled me and gave me purpose as my organs fill my body and give me life. Like my blood His voice is still fresh within me and flows through me moment by moment. A memory for my soul and motivation for my flesh.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

But I’ve learned to hear the smiles in my friend’s voices. My friends have built me up like the slaves, architects, astronomers, mathematicians, astrophysicists, and scientists built the pyramids. Alone I would be mere clay, dormant. Now I am a pyramid laid brick by brick. They’ve restlessly served me with hands and feet. You would think I was a monarch or celebrity. I’ve found stability because my friends are crevices in this pyramid and chambers untouched by light. Their influence dwells in the inner me. I await them, as darkness awaits light.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

But I’ve seen all the primary colors. Red, blue, and green intertwined in endless possibilities as they fill the world around me. Just three colors, color my world. Everything around me no longer glistens, it pearls.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

But I’ve seen aquatic animals breach the formidable depths for air that floats on land. I’ve seen the roots of seeds chase life like humans chase meaning, then suicidally flower. If you’ve ever seen a caterpillar or butterfly, you’ll never guess one was the banana and the other the peel. That’s life’s zeal.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

But I’ve seen Earth’s pimples, known to man as mountains. I’ve climbed them and realized my impermanence and insignificance. I once climbed a mountain and found another mountain sitting on top. Then, I climbed that mountain in the middle of June and found a snowy, dynamic ecosystem.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD

Nor do I desire to see Him. For no one sees Him and breathes another breath. No one sees Him and heart, beats after that. He is clouded by darkness and He is a blinding light. We live by faith and not by sight.

We are so accustomed to living that even in a mysterious universe we have allowed life to become commonplace and have lost our sense of wonder. That is because we do not without effort awaken to the beauty and mystery of the world. How can one be blind to such things is a source of amazement to the alert soul.
